Serendipity

I frequently work side-by-side with the fun and talented crew of Serendipity Videography. This time, I had the pleasure of putting them in front of me. They’re all a blast and it doesn’t take much effort to keep the excitement high. Taryn’s idea of having everyone on bleachers, routing for their team, was a perfect setting to convey their energy and personalities.

Though I prefer being behind the lens, they recently had me in front of their cameras as well. I can’t wait to see what brilliance they’ve created. Stay tuned, I know it’s going to be awesome.

Dana and Jeremy's wedding last weekend at the stunning Royal Palms was even more beautiful than I had imagined. The 80 degree weather, the contagious emotions, the 16 person bridal party, their two dogs, the 93 year old Grandmother singing and dancing... it was awesome! And, made even more perfect with the expertise of Imoni Events, Table Tops, Etc., Envelope Envy, My Wedding Film and Creative Touch, just to name a few. Capturing the wedding of such a wonderfully close couple, not to mention gorgeous, and getting to do it with creative friends just reaffirms my belief that I truly have the best job in the world. Can't wait for next weekend.

IIDA COUTURE 2011

Last week marked the third year that I've shot the IIDA Couture fashion event. Hosted at the Hotel Valley Ho, this event was more spectacular than ever. Adorned with outfits made from carpet, wall paper, furniture coverings and other cool materials not typically associated with clothing, models strutted a runway of glass cutting through the center of the pool. It was awesome!

For the year of 2010, I took at least one picture every day with my beloved iphone. Inspired by Chase Jarvis "The Best Camera Is The One That's With You", this was a project to look closer at the common moments in life (one of my favorites is the Circle K and their ironic address) and stay creative while working with limited equipment.

Amanda and Ryan in Scottsdale, AZ

After an engagement session overlooking Camelback Mountain (the site of Ryan's famous proposal- check out Mixed Bag) and Old Town Scottsdale, then Amanda's bridal portraits at Destiny's Bride, their wedding finally came. I really love these guys and am inspired by how much they enjoy life. It's evident by the size of their smiling bridal party that I'm not the only one.

Church nuptials were held at St. Bernard of Clairvaux and then Ollie the Trolley carried us to the stunning Silverleaf Club for their reception. Though I didn't have much time to take advantage of the amazing backdrops, I think Silverleaf is my new favorite venue. With arrangements by the Flower Studio and some awesome entertainment from The Instant Classics, just to drop a couple more names, their day was perfect.

Beka at the Desert Botanical Garden

My photographer Rebekah shot the wedding of Jenna and Danny earlier this month and I'm totally in love with it. Before I even saw the pictures, she emailed me saying "It was my favorite ceremony and first dance to date. I cried and laughed more than I ever have at a wedding." Their gorgeous day was celebrated at the Desert Botanical Garden, one of my favorite places, and was full of laughter from start to finish. The true passion Rebekah has for wedding photography shines in her pictures like that golden light through the Garden's trees. It's inspirational. And one more element is obvious here, Jenna and Danny are madly in love with each other.

Tempe Portraits

Asking a couple to kiss and hang all over each other is a given during portrait sessions. "You guys just ignore me over there and make out for a little while." As if they didn't have a gazing crowd while I'm in the middle of the road being honked at. But with Inbal and Adam, I actually had to ask them to stop making out. Their deep passion for each other kept the embraces long and tight. We also tied in important elements like Adam's Bronco and airplanes to represent the many rendezvous they've enjoyed during long-distance periods of their relationship as well as desert backdrops since they're moving out of Arizona... out of the country all together.

In early December, I shot with the wonderfully talented Rebekah for Nicole and Justin's beautiful wedding. We're always off to events in different directions so this was a treat. Their celebration was held at the Biltmore Resort, which is a blast to shoot anytime with it's history and great architectural designs. Then, add tons of twinkle lights and holiday decorations, dear friends, not to mention a gorgeous couple full of emotion, and all is right with the world.

Congratulations you two. And, thank you for including me in your lives.

Mixed Bag

Whew! I think that was the craziest fall I've had yet. From Halloween to Thanksgiving, weddings to babies, a hot air balloon proposal 1 mile over the valley and the biggest buck in Arizona in 65 years. That's not to mention life, and death too, unfortunately, happening along the way. I'm finally coming up for air and realizing it's been a month since writing last. So, here's a tossed salad of stuff from the last two months to get me back on track.

100 Miles and Running

In September, I wrote about my friend Deb who had just ran a 50 mile race in training for the Javelina Jundred. The 100 miler was held 10/23 and Deb completed it in just over 24 hours. I've said it before and I'll say it again, she's an animal. Running for over 24 hours straight without much more than a quick break every 15 miles to grab a sandwich or hit the port-o-john. This is a physical feat very few people in the world can comprehend, let alone relate to. Here is a little portion from a recap she wrote about her achievement:

"The race is held in the McDowell Mountains outside of Fountain Hills, AZ. It is comprised of six loops on the Pemberton Trail and a seventh “partial” loop using the Pemberton and Tonto Tank Trails. The race begins in the clockwise direction (Javelina Jeadquarters to Coyote Camp to Jackass Junction) and alternates each loop. The seventh and final loop begins in the clockwise direction and upon reaching Coyote Camp, returns to the finish line on the Tonto Tank Trail. In my opinion, the clockwise direction was much easier than the counter clockwise run. The first 5.5 miles of the counter clockwise direction is a slow gradual climb in a sandy wash that really zaps your energy for the remainder of the loop. Ed Wagner, my good friend and primary training partner for Javelina, and I decided to run most of the first 4 laps (100k) together. Except for the last 3-4 miles, this was all during the day light. The first two laps went really smoothly and we got to talk and meet the other runners along the way. The washing machine loops were really good for crossing paths and seeing other runners during the entire race. East Valley Runners (EVR) had a strong showing this year at Javelina, with Dan, Amanda, Marty, Dawn and Mike also running. It was great to “high five” and hug them each lap along the way. It really added to the experience.

Laps 5 & 6 were my dark hours, literally and mentally. It was nice to think I had already run a 100k and earned a belt buckle, but I had over 40 miles still to go, and I was getting really tired. Tracey Hage took over as my first pacer in the dark. At this time, I knew I needed to incorporate a lot more walking in my pace to survive; and we just let Ed and Shannon (his 5th lap pacer) go. Tracey had some great stories to keep me going and we had a smooth but slow lap. Lap 6 was the last time I had to run the hard “counter clockwise” direction. Of all my pacers, I feel the most sorry for Matt Hage who had to pull me through Lap 6. I really had nothing left for him. He did a great job keeping me going and instead of asking if I wanted to run, would just tell me to “run now”! I don’t think I said more than 4-5 words to him the entire loop. At the Jackass Junction aid station, because my energy was so low, I thought I should fill up on their sports drink. Big mistake! I had had no stomach problems during the race until that time. Within two miles after that the cramps started and I had to stop. We slowly made it to the Coyote Camp aid station where veteran 100-miler runner, Honey Albrecht gave me great advice to take Tums every 15 minutes. That did the trick and I was good for the remainder of the race. The final lap was a “partial” of 9.5 miles only. At that point I could feel the end near and rebounded significantly. Jay Danek took over as pacer and I felt like a new person. We ran consistently most of the entire loop, even the up hills and enjoyed the sunrise on the last few miles. It was a really nice way to finish the event.

At 6:47 am, I ran in to race head quarters, and got my 100 mile belt buckle, and am now officially in the 100-miler club!"

Kinda puts our daily trials into perspective, doesn't it? Congratulations Deb! It was fun shooting both races and your accomplishments are an inspiration to us all.

Engaging in a little Lawlessness

Jaime and Mark's recent wedding in Sedona, AZ was perfect. After taking portraits in Tlaquepaque (there will never be enough time to fully enjoy the beauty of that place) and Schnebly Hill Road, their day was set against the creek at Los Abrigados. With Fall leaves lining the aisle and little rays of sun peeking through the trees, the ceremony began with claps of thunder and ended with bangs of cap guns. Each guest was also given a lantern to light the way to their table before endless trips through the photo booth. It was one of those weddings I wish we could shoot again... and again... and again. I guess I'll just have to wait for their kids.

A wedding more perfect than those numbers!

I always like to tie in personal elements or locations with an engagement session to tell the couple's story. It was on this plane where Ashley and Dan first met and where he later proposed. With so much sentimental importance, and since just about everyone attending Ashley and Dan's wedding were pilots (even Grandma at 93), there was no better place for portraits than at the airport. I wish we could have included her custom black and orange Bronco but I can't really complain about this sweet, little prop.

50 MILES

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending my associate photographer's wedding followed by shooting a 50 mile race. This was only my 3rd wedding as a guest in about 8 years and 250 as a hired photographer. I must say, it was a bit strange and I think I prefer to be behind the camera. Though, it was nice to enjoy the company of wonderful people and a few Sangrias while watching Julie Mikos work her magic.

After the wedding, my hands and brain were itching to shoot so I headed out to the Javelina Full Moon 12 Hour Night Run. This, for some like my friend Deb Hamberlin, is a warm up race to the Javelina Jundred on October 23. Yes, 50 miles is a warm up to the 100 miler... they're animals. I was able to catch up with her during a quick peanut butter sandwich break before starting the final lap. I'll be shooting at the Jundred as well for part of a new personal project so there will be more of Deb to come.

Big congrats to Beka and Josh, may your long life together be happy and healthy, and to Deb for a first place finish!

Engagement Portraits at The Royal Palms

I think I could spend a lifetime shooting at my favorite AZ venue and only fall further in love with it. Even in the heat of August. The elegant backdrops of beautiful architecture, rich tones and textures and perfect landscaping bring me new inspiration every time. Add an awesome couple like Dana and Jeremy and what could be better? Though their 4 dogs weren't able to attend our shoot as originally planned, we had a great time. Can't wait for the wedding.

Under Fire

I've been hiding out a bit this summer in Northern AZ to cool off and recharge the batteries. Not much shooting but a lot of family time, biking and margaritas. One of the shoots that did bring me back down to the Phoenix heat was a grant event for the El Mirage Fire Dept. Ironic, I think. New environments always present new challenges and a only a few minutes, if I'm lucky, to fall back on experience and overcome them. Lighting, tight spaces, changes in timelines, heat and pit bulls (I thought firemen had Dalmatians... cute, cuddly Dalmatians) where a few of the problems this day. While the latter might not sneak up on me at a wedding, the other obstacles most certainly will. And, they'll bring some of their friends along like rain, dead batteries, stolen camera, grandma breaking her hip and, my favorite, gymnasium reception.

Which is why I decided to use this example for my new post. While my reputation and an eternity of family memories weren't at stake, those challenges are frequent at weddings and many of them are actually expected. I do have a great time as a wedding photographer and I think that's essential to creating beautiful pictures. But I don't take the responsibility that goes with it lightly. My performance has to be exceptional under any circumstances. A wedding photographer is always under fire (no pun intended) and the inexperienced might not know how to handle it.

So, to all newly engaged couples planning their wedding, think about the future and the fact that your children will be passing on those pictures to their children. It's not just a service you get for that one day so hire the best photographer you can, not the best package. It won't matter what you paid or how many products are included if the pictures aren't good. Not even these guys could save that disaster.

Rachel and Brian

Complete with their dog, Twinkie, and a surprise appearance by the beloved ASU mascot, Sparky, Rachel and Brian's July wedding was nothing less than hot. Though, for Phoenix standards, the temperature was pretty comfortable. Endless backdrops of the Four Seasons Resort, a big and beautiful bridal party, Agnes (her dress), fried chicken and cheddar biscuits forever sealed in their vows, sing-a-longs to Steel Panther... awesome. Totally awesome!

From the first day I met Rachel, I knew this wedding was going to be great. And, after our engagement session, I knew this marriage would be one to stand the tests of time, heart ache, broken bones, medical school and anything else life could throw at them. It's an honor for me to be a part of their lives and I look forward to continuing our friendship.

I owe a special Thank You to Linda Wagner at Destiny's Bride for referring Rachel and Brian to me. She is always a joy to be around, the best make up artist you can find, a wealth of knowledge and an absolutely wonderful person. For any soon-to-be brides, Linda should be one of the first people you talk to.

I love intimate weddings. What's not to love? They're small in numbers and big in emotions. A long weekend gives old friends time to reminisce and new families the opportunity to share their history while joining their future.

I spent 3 days with Sarah and Frank at the stunning Tides Resort in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. The perfect jungle backdrop for their amazing wedding. The experience was made even more memorable for me with a couple of firsts: my first time as a maid of honor (I had the honor of zipping up Sarah's dress) and the first time a monkey capped off a ceremony. Nice surprise, Frank. Not much more needs to be said except Thank You. Thank you for being such a wonderful couple and thank you for including me in your in your beautiful day.

Time Flies!

I think I said that recently and I'm sure I'll say it again. With children, the days are long but the years are short. I've been shooting portraits of our boys at the big milestones since day one and I can't tell you how amazing it is to look back. We're unaware of their little, daily changes until we see comparisons. One of my early blog posts was about Max's first year of portraits, taken monthly, with the same chair to have a visual scale of his growth. He began laying sideways between the overstuffed armrests and finished standing proudly in the seat.

We're well into annual sessions now as Markus turned 4 in February and Max just had his 3rd BDay this month. And, until they're tired of me pointing a camera at them, we'll keep it going. I'm sure I'll be doing their Senior portraits before I know what happened.

I always try to tie in sentimental locations, activities or objects for my portrait sessions to tell a more interesting and meaningful story. When I first met with Jaime and Mark, I instantly loved them. Very sweet, fun and madly in love. What really captured me was hearing about the moment that started it all. I'll skip the details but it was at a Roller Derby bout... love at first, sweaty sight. And, no rules Roller Derby, I might add. You would never know from Jaime's sweetness that she's a killer.

I wouldn't have wanted to do their engagement portraits any other way than to bring some skating in. Though, I don't think she'll need her pads at the wedding, we are hoping to have the singer of the Murder City Devils officiate.

Heartfelt Rave

I just received the nicest response ever from one of my weddings and have to share it. What a great way to start my day. I truly love being a wedding photographer but it's knowing how much people value their pictures, and the wonderful memories saved, that makes it all worthwhile. This is why I love what I do.

Thank you Jennifer and Wayne for including me in your lives. My own will forever be more complete with friends like you in it.

"We didn't see the pictures until yesterday morning. And I can tell you, I sobbed happy tears through my morning coffee! We spent the whole day with family yesterday, sharing our pictures and our stories and the memories!

Ben, truthfully, the pictures are exquisite. After shooting the engagement pictures with you, we knew the wedding pictures would be equally beautiful, but I didn't know they would take my breath away.

As I have told you on several occasions, the whole point of a wedding, for us, was for the memories we would make with our families. It wasn't about the big party or a $5000 dress. It was about sharing the happiest day of our lives with the people we love, and having that memory in both our minds as well as in pictures. And you helped us make that vision a reality. We love the artistic pictures that show your creativity like with the rings or with all the work you did with reflections. The ceremony pictures are like a working slideshow. It was like you caught every nuance of the time period I am most fuzzy on and brought it to life after the fact for me. The portrait shots (and many of the family shots under 'prelude') brought me to tears...of joy! And the reception shots were the candid shots that we were so anxious to have.

We are so grateful to have worked work you through this adventure. Our one regret was not having you there to document the cocktail hour from the the night before the wedding and on the party bus to document our night at San Tan Flat saloon the night after wedding!!! There were so many great moments over the course of the weekend, that I wish you been there for all three days with us! Let's just say that our guests don't have an eye like yours when it comes to the disposable cameras we left out! Hahaha!

Ben, we don't know how to thank you enough for helping us relive the beautiful moments of that day through your pictures. We couldn't have found anyone better than you to work with. We needed a photographer, and both sincerely feel like we found not only one hell of a photographer, but a friend named BQ along the way as well!!"

Happy Mother's Day

I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day. It has definitely been a Spring full of babies so I'm sure all of you new moms out there were in heaven celebrating your first official Mom's Day. I've had some really fun baby portraits so far this year and I'm looking forward to many more.

Silver Baby

Though, this kid's sure to be a golden child with mom's creative genes. Many of you know my associate photographer, Rebekah Silver, and have enjoyed the amazing pictures she takes for BQ Photography. Brilliant eye, great to be around, always goes above and beyond... the list goes on. On top of everything else, she knows how to read my scatterbrain during a wedding and pushes me to be a better photographer. I've been asked a lot lately why she isn't around this Spring and that's because she's due with her first baby any minute now. Literally, she was actually due about a week ago.

While Rebekah shoots with me all the time, she's never been the focus of my camera aside from a quick lighting test on the dance floor. Until recently. We waited as long as comfortably possible to do a maternity session with her belly as big as possible. I love a big, in-your-face baby belly. We had a lot of fun with her and Josh at different spots along the Bush Highway. I'll be sending the baby announcement soon. Though, I doubt she'll need me to take her pictures at that point.

Shooting at the Hotel Valley Ho in Scottsdale, AZ is always fun but this one was a bit different. Claudine from Black Cat Vintage, a vintage clothing store based in Tucson, called me to do a fashion shoot with a selection of her finest clothing. Specializing in mid-century designs previously worn by the likes of Betty Grable, the Hotel Valley Ho made a perfect setting. Huge THANK YOU to Kristin Heggli at the hotel for all of her help. Since every piece has lived such a historic life, the concept of using mannequins was born. “If these clothes could only talk…” Our main character, Amazonia, and her girlfriends were brought to life by these beautiful outfits for a weekend retreat.

For the love

I’ve always considered wedding photography and being invited to capture such an important day in people’s lives a great honor. There are many venues of photography that get more credit than weddings and I openly admit my past ignorance as well. But how many of those make as much difference with memories and emotions evoked only growing deeper with each passing day? I could go on and on about the importance of the pictures I take but it is the importance that makes me truly love what I do. Anyone who says they have the best job in the world hasn’t been a wedding photographer.

And the journey continues…

On Monday morning I poured my usual 5:00 cup of coffee and saw a new message. Claudia and Dan, who’s wedding I photographed in 2008, had me on speed dial for the day they went in to deliver their first baby. They wanted to have pictures as soon as possible and knowing, myself, how much a newborn changes in the first couple hours, I was thrilled for the opportunity of capturing this amazing moment in their lives too. The surreal conversation I had with him on the drive over went something like “Yep, we’re pushing now. Are you here yet?” with Claudia in the background explaining to her mom that I was only taking pictures of the baby once it was born.

I consider myself lucky to have been there in the first minutes of their marriage and now for the first minutes of their family. Baby Z didn’t even have a name yet, but he did have portraits. There is no doubt about it, I have the best job in the world.

IIDA Couture 2010

The IIDA Couture 2010 event was bigger and awesomer (yes, I said awesomer) than ever. After shooting the 2009 event, I was thrilled to come back for this one. I find so much inspiration when working around others who are pushing their creative limits. The hair and makeup, done by Toni & Guy, was over the top. Peacock feathers for eyelash extensions! I'd love to see those on a bride. And the fashions were amazingly beautiful. Design teams used interior design materials like carpet, furniture fabric, window treatments, paint swatches, neon and wood to create these elaborate pieces. For anyone who appreciates creativity and design, go to Couture 2011. You'll be amazed.

Such a fun and meaningful wedding I had with Nichole and Craig this January. I posted some of the images we did for their engagement session over the summer and I had been anxiously awaiting the wedding day ever since. Following a beautiful ceremony at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Phoenix, we celebrated their love at the Arizona Science Center. She had recently begun medical school so they added a bit of science theme to their wedding reception. Among other fun, personalized details, their monogram is like two pieces from the table of elements, an x-ray was included in each invitation and beakers were used to toast champagne. They put their whole hearts into making it amazing and special and it will be one of my most memorable because of that. It's ALL about the love.

And, anyone who's shot with me knows how excited I get about clouds... awesome! Just a gorgeous evening that grew even more so as night fell and was then capped off with a full moon. The heavens truly descended that day in January.

Nichole and Craig, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives. I can't wait to continue our story. Thank you for the amazing letter you sent me as well. That's the nicest response I've ever received and I wanted to share it with everyone.

Craig and I have never been very photogenic! We both actually try to avoid the camera. However, with all the excitement that surrounded us, I guess it was easy to not notice the always watchful lens… OR, it was because you executed the picture taking like a work of art! Masterfully! It was such a stress relief to know that we were in such wonderful and capable hands.

Everything came out so great, the engagement photos, the guest book, the wedding portraits and even the small cards you sent with the web site instructions. Amazing!!!

I have gone through all of the weddings pictures several times and there are moments captured that I have already forgot took place. It is so great that I can just flip through all these breathtaking pictures and remember those subtle moments as well. It goes without saying that Craig and I will enjoy these photos for the rest of our lives; they are a physical representation of one of the most wonderful memories we will ever have. Happy Valentine's

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day and the month of love, I wanted to follow up my last post with another amazing story from the heart. Debbie and Chris, you will forever be one of my most touching, emotional and inspirational couples. I love you guys and wish you happiness together beyond this short life we know now.

Debbie’s words:

Ours is a story of a special friendship that turned into love. Chris and I met in the year 2000 when he began working the same place as I, in the Phoenix Fire Department Regional Dispatch Center. Over the years, our friendship developed over work outings and conversations we had to get through those long nights of working night shift. I eventually promoted to supervisor and at one time, began directly supervising Chris. He and I had a lot of fun talking about life, love, and our annoyances of the job. In the year 2005, my husband, Lonny, passed away suddenly and tragically. One of the first phone calls I received while following the ambulance was from Chris. He expressed heartfelt concern and well wishes for both of us. Over the next 6 months, Chris was one of my best supporters when I needed an ear in the middle of the night. He even forced me to go out one night saying I needed to get out of the house. Finally, in May of 2006, we had our first real date. He took me out for sushi and sake. Over the next two years, we took things slowly partly because we had to and partly because it was a good idea. We both knew early on though, that this was the real deal. We went on many trips, were introduced to each others family and friends, and began the art of discovering who each other really was. Thankfully, families and friends gave approval and we found that we had found a life partner in one another. There was never an official proposal. We always just knew, but it was cemented over a tearful (me) conversation one afternoon. Scared that all the waiting would jeopardize Chris' desires for our relationship, I gave him a chance to part ways. Instead, he took my hand and told me that all he had ever wanted was a good lady and a good marriage and that I had treated him better than anyone ever had. He wasn't going anywhere. The deal was sealed and several months later over a text messaging session, we agreed to go pick out my engagement ring. Now… let the happy ever after begin!!

Delicate Life

I know it’s been a month since my last post and, embarrassingly, a month before that one, but life just seems to slip away sometimes. I was preparing yesterday for a new post when the phone rang… a life had, literally, slipped away.

As a wedding and portrait photographer, I get to have fun, meet great people and constantly challenge myself creatively. But, it’s the importance of my pictures that I truly love. I’m called to capture moments that will be treasured for generations. It’s an honor and I greatly appreciate being there for my couples from “I do!” to parenthood. So, I thought the perfect post to start this year (I know it’s February already) would be a newborn session with one of my wedding couples.

While editing the pictures, removing baby pimples and a little scratch Emily Jane put on her delicate skin during the shoot, May called. May and Manny are also one of my couples and particularly dear to me. I’m a bit of a sucker for true love stories and theirs has always brought sappy tears to my eye (figuratively speaking) every time I’ve told it. They were actually married in 1991 but couldn’t afford a lavish event and settled for a simple civil ceremony. On April 18, 2009, their 18th Anniversary, they finally got their beautiful church ceremony and big reception. They waited 18 years to have their dream wedding and beautiful, it was.

Shortly after, Manny was diagnosed with lung cancer. Very advanced and very serious. May and I quickly started working on their wedding book and just received it a couple weeks ago. I think Manny must have been waiting to see his album that was so long in the making. Now, my tears are real as I tell their story.

What do you do with a teenager who wants to “get these pictures over with as soon as possible”? Let him wear dark sunglasses and look bad-ass. For a successful portrait session, it's essential to make it about them by tapping into their personality and reflecting their individuality. I shot Joe's senior portraits at the ASU campus in Tempe, AZ and, though this isn't his future school, the concept and modern environment created a perfect backdrop. After showing him the red wall picture (our first shot) and how cool this was going to be, we spent nearly 2 hours on what he planned to be more like 15 minutes. Of course, I had to throw a couple smiley shots in there for Mom.

Happy Thanksgiving

I hope everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving with friends and family. Being the chef of the house, I was in heaven prepping meals and cooking for two days. And, lucky for me, the unspoken rule is whoever cooks doesn't have to clean.

Now, it's quiet around here and I'm getting ready for Katie and Pat's wedding at the Biltmore Hotel. A little morning inspiration from the the Strobist and Ben Chrisman, wrestling and car races with my boys and coffee with my wife... I'm very thankful for this beautiful life.

Day of Design with Barclay Butera

I recently had the pleasure of shooting an event at the Arizona Design Center with guest speaker Barclay Butera. I find all creative fields fascinating and am particularly interested in interior design, having studied it before falling in love with photography. Barclay is amazing, not only in his visions and the scope of work he's accomplished at such a young age, but in his persona. He has a lot of pride in his work and especially the relationships with those he's creating for. And, I'm guessing he still has at least a few more decades of ideas to treat us with.

Re-Session for BQ

Thank you to everyone who came in for the Re-Session portraits this summer. It seemed like the busy-work of the off season would never end so taking the time to play a little was much needed. Sometimes we just have to change gears and get back to the important things… fun, friendships and family. It was great to shoot with you all again, catch up on your lives and meet a couple new additions. I’m already looking forward to our next session.

Destination (for me) Engagements

As a follow up to my previous engagement series, I wanted to share these destination sessions. Especially in the Phoenix area, many couples have destination weddings so documenting them in their home town can be even more important to the whole story. Who knows where we’ll end up in life or how long we’ll be there. I grew up thinking there was no way in hell (pun intended) I would ever live in Phoenix. Now, I love it but we take a lot of family pictures here because we may move again someday. Which is very likely considering my wife and I have lived in 13 places over 15 years of our relationship. Photographing my couples in the places they live and love is great fun for me and priceless for them. That time is really good for us to get better acquainted as well since much of the planning is done through phone calls and email. We finally connect on a personal basis.

Over the Summer months I’ve had some great engagement sessions. I love this time with my couples because the camera barrier is broken down and we really get to know each other. Not that I ever want it to happen again but the time I had with Erin and Dave while being cited for trespassing was a big bonding moment. Also, spending an hour or two playing around tells me who they are and gives me better direction for the wedding portraits. Most people have a certain look whether it’s straight faced or all smiles, romantic or edgy and most have a “good side.” However, those details aren’t really known until they spend some time taking, and looking at, their pictures. Now when the wedding day comes, I’ll be more like a friend showing up rather than just the photographer. I can’t wait!

Getting back to my blog this morning for a new post, I didn't expect the realization of how long it had been since the last one. This summer was kind of taken over by a bunch of busy work and overshadowed some of the great things that did happen. I got to recharge my batteries at a photo seminar in Vegas, our 3 year-old started Pre School, I mixed my BDay/family vacation with an engagement session in NY and trip to Boston for portraits with Jen Rabito and her beautiful family (can't wait to meet Matthew) and a wedding. More to come on that wedding because they have one of the best stories a photographer could ever hear- the groom is completely blind yet photo/video were the most important vendors in the hope of one day seeing their wedding. I tear-up thinking about them. So, I did have a great summer, just not sure where it went.

1 Month, 2 Months, 3 Months...

So many changes happen in the first year of a baby’s life and they’ll never happen again so capture as many of them as possible. Not everyone can schedule a portrait session once a month for a year straight but it's a good idea to catch at least a handful of stages. Maybe every other month or 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. When our boys were growing through their first year of life, I did a portrait session every month to chronicle the amazing changes. It’s easy to forget when children loose the baby face, get the first tooth or start standing on their own. We have some of those moments written down but words can’t describe a chubby-cheeked smile as well as a 20x30 print on the living room wall. In chronicling your baby’s first year, having a point of reference makes the changes even more dramatic. A chair, toy, blanket, etc. really emphasizes just how much they’ve grown each time. I put Max, our youngest boy, in the same chair as a part of his monthly portraits. In the beginning, he could comfortably sprawl out and by the last session he was standing on it.

I’ve paired images of Markus with Max for their first twelve months, starting at 2 weeks old, along with Max’s first and last shot in the chair and their second year portraits.

Trash the Dress shoot

I've had the lucky pleasure of shooting with this couple many times from engagements (we all received trespassing citations for that one), bridal portraits (see previous post) and their beautiful wedding day. Erin is also a photographer, pretty much making Dave a professional model (pro bono), so I've had full creative license with them. I love working with other creative people. Big shout out to Jennifer Bowen for referring Erin to me when she was already booked- I owe you.

We've done another shoot along the way and I'm so thankful to have had Point In Time Productions do a video for me. We had a lot of fun and no one got arrested this time.

Bridal Portraits Before The Wedding

Many of my wedding couples will see each other and do the group portraits before their ceremony. I’m never the person who will say, “You need to do this or that.” but there are some benefits that come from shooting early if the tradition of seeing each other for the first time in the aisle isn't more important. The first sight of a bride and her groom is such a nice, intimate moment with no one else around. I like to stand back and capture the cries and kisses during what is likely the last private moment the couple will have until midnight. We can actually do more group variations and then after the ceremony, everyone can attend the cocktail hour rather than spending that time with me.

Since there are going to be multiple dress fittings (with a final clean and press), a trial run for hair and makeup and often times a trial bouquet, let’s take advantage of it for a portrait session before your wedding day. Getting the tux for another day is cheap and you may as well get your money’s worth out of your wedding gown. Speaking of getting your use out of the dress, I’ll be following this up shortly with a trash the dress like you’ve never seen.

Congratulations to Erin and Dave, who were married 4/25 at the Camelback Inn. You may recognize them from a past post about our Criminal Trespassing Engagement Session. We did this portrait session about a week before their wedding and were able to use many areas of the resort that wouldn’t have been available on their wedding day.

Beginning of a legacy

While many moments fade into history, only a few will become more important with each new day. Your wedding and the birth of your children are such moments because of the relationship that has begun. You could no longer live another day without them as the love continues to grow deeper into your heart. My first paycheck, first car and first house were all great days, but they don’t mean as much now as they did then. However, I still get short of breath thinking about standing alone on the beach, waiting for my soon-to-be wife to walk down the aisle. And, I still tear up when I think about holding my wife as we saw our son for the first time. Those brief moments are so much larger than the few hours they lasted. They have not only defined my life, they are the reason for it.

My two boys, 3 years and almost 2 years old, are at their first day of preschool/daycare today, which is why I’m going back a little bit with this topic. Every new day with them makes the first day even more precious. I can’t wait to get home and hear how much fun they had.

IIDA Couture 2009 Fashion Show

The International Interior Design Association held it's second annual fashion event on 2/12/09 at the Phoenix Art Museum. This was a fundraiser benefiting The Wellness Community, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support, education and hope for people with cancer and their loved ones. 34 design teams were paired with 34 manufacturers to create an outfit using a specific color and one of the 4 elements: Earth, Water, Air, Fire. Some were done so well you would easily find their design hanging in a boutique, some were interesting combinations of carpet and wood ...and one guy was covered in Formica. All were incredibly creative and I hope to shoot it again next year (hint, hint IIDA).

I just attended the 2009 WPPI Business Institute in Las Vegas. I wish I could have stayed longer to attend some seminars and the trade show but that day and a half of information was great. As a photographer, it's very easy to just have fun and get comfortable shooting while, unfortunately, neglecting the business. It's so important to continue learning and growing because work, life and ultimately our clients will benefit. With a head full new information and fun ideas I'm already looking forward to next year.

Bao Suong and My in Vietnam

As part of an ongoing project, I had the opportunity of traveling to Vietnam to document the wedding of Suong and My. Just getting there takes nearly a full day so I had only a few hours to see the craziness of Ho Chi Minh streets. After meeting with the brother and sister of the groom, we traveled to Cam Ranh where the family lives and the wedding would take place. I decided to spend the first night in a beach area called Nha Trang, where the 2008 Miss Universe pageant was held. The next day, I went back to Cam Ranh to meet the family and get a glimpse of their lives. They're such wonderful people and treated me like an old friend. I wasn't even allowed to pay for the toys I brought home to my children. Oh, and the food was incredible. They live in a very rural community where, everyday, they butcher pigs and chickens, keep what they need for meals and take the rest across the road to the market where it's sold or traded for other goods. One of the most shocking differences is their lack of trash. Everything is fresh so there is no package waste. For a house of about 6 people, there is one tiny trash basket that was full of my water bottles, candy wrappers and batteries. I did a bit of shooting at the market, soccer field, cashew factory and the school. The next morning was the wedding and we started at 2:00am to slaughter pigs for the days feast. What a way to wake up. The church ceremony started at 4:30am and I watched the sun rise through the misty fields. This was followed by two ceremonial receptions where each family parades through the village roads to be welcomed into the bride's and groom's family homes. By 5:00pm, most of us were drunk and ready for bed with heavy, mountain rains soon to follow. It was an incredible experience and I'm very grateful to the Duong family for taking me in.

I know it's well after Christmas but I wanted to pay homage to my Francis Francis. I love this coffee maker and usually start looking forward to my afternoon cup at about 10:00am. After the devastating Cardinals loss, this little beauty got me through the long Monday. Thank you again honey.

Where not to shoot!

While Tempe is a great place for a portrait session (the lake at sunset, Mill Ave. at night, the upside down triangle building (Tempe City Hall?), etc.), I can now suggest one very cool place not to go. I was recently doing an engagement session there and had planned on shooting a few different places. After playing around the lake for a little while, I thought "Hey, why don't we go shoot up on the old bridge." Old yes, but that train bridge is still active. We managed to get a few good shots in before the cop came and once we were firmly in his custody, back on the street, Mr. Officer got on his radio. "This is Mr. Officer, you can start the train back up." My heart stopped. I had no idea that was still an active track and certainly would not have put my couple in harms way on purpose. But, sure enough, as we were being cited for criminal trespassing, the train rolled past. I felt like a 15 year old being busted for skateboarding again. Thankfully, we weren't on the new light rail track, that would have landed all of us in JAIL. Erin and Dave, sorry again. At least we have a great story.

Winter News

I had a full schedule after last Fall's wedding season with a move to the Point In Time Productions studio. I always enjoy working next to them at weddings and being together in the studio has been a lot of fun. Here are a few images from hosting the December WEN event-

I also did a portrait fundraiser through October and November and donated all of the session proceeds to Childhelp http://www.childhelp.org/. They're a wonderful organization dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse and I'm thrilled to have contributed $1500 to their cause. I'm looking forward to doing it again next year. I was honored with the opportunity of shooting the current Phoenix Bride and Groom cover so if you haven't seen the new issue yet, please check it out. We set the stage in Angelic Grove's studio with a simple, elegant backdrop and beautiful flower arrangements. Our time was cut short after less than an hour of shooting but we're all very pleased with the results.
